Modelling me

Our COGS unit for Term 2 is ‘Me’.

This unit helps the children “develop an understanding of who they are by exploring the ways in which we are all the same, and also the ways in which we are each special and unique”.

Yesterday we made models of ourselves with playdough.  We had to think about how we look and describe ourselves to a thinking partner before heading back to our desks with a ball of playdough.

Look at how they turned out!

Can you notice any  features in our playdough `me’ models?

Whisper phones

Our whisper phones have arrived!  Ms Dowling thought they would be great for us to use when we are reading because they help us hear our own voices (which are nice and quiet), improve focus and attention and are really FUN!  Yesterday was our first time using a whisper phone.   We were excited and wanted to have a play with them before we used them for reading.

Now we are ready to use them when we read.

A big THANK YOU to Makai’s family for helping us get the pipes and to Mr Hendry our friendly GA, who did lots of work to cut the pipes and the phones for us.

What do you think of our new whisper phones?

Gymsports

Every Tuesday morning is Gymsports for KD.  We head up to the hall, take our shoes off and then head inside to do some warm-ups.  This week we started with a game of Indians and Teepees.

Next we listen carefully as the teachers explain what we need to do.  Some of the activities involve equipment like hula hoops, balance beams and monkey bars, whilst others just involve us using our bodies and the mats.  Look how clever we are!

KD do the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This term we will using the story `Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ to have fun learning about the alphabet.  Some of the KD children asked if I could put it on the blog so that they could watch it at home.

We will be doing lots of interesting activities, so check back soon to join in on the fun.

What kind of letters do you think the Mummas and Pappas are?

What kind of letters do you think the babies are?

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter and that you are all enjoying the holidays together.   Just in case you missed out on visiting our classroom to see the Easter bunnies or watching the KD kids at the Easter Hat parade you can have a look now!

(Thanks to the helpers for lending a helping hand with our Easter activities!)

Counting fun

Our buddies in Room 4 wanted to know if we groove when we sing the `Counting down from 20′ song.   The answer is YES!   Ms Dowling used the camera to record the KD kids counting and grooving.

We have also been learning all about 5 using the five frame.  The children worked in groups to play the `Five frame flash’ and build what they saw on their own frames.  Together we made a poster of all the different ways we discovered to make 5.

It’s a good idea to practise at home too and this game is a fun way to do it!

Look at the poster we made.  Can you tell how we described a `big 5′ or a `small 5′?

Fruit Kebab Day

This term we have been learning about making healthy choices.  On Friday Kindergarten made some delicious fruit kebabs for our fruit break.

We all sat outside together to eat.

After lunch we decided to draw some fruit patterns.

Can you describe any of the patterns?

What do you know about patterns?

Have you ever made a fruit kebab?

What’s in the pot this week?

This week we are busy looking at some new letters and the sounds that they make.

We have been having fun playing the `Buried Treasure’ game on the smartboard (using the letters that we are learning).  We take turns to say the sounds on each coin and blend them together to read the words.  It is a bit tricky but we are getting better everyday!  If the word is a real word we put it in the treasure chest.  If the word is a nonsense word it goes into the garbage bin. Click the picture to play it at home.

We also love counting and have been practising everyday.  Ms Dowling tries to find fun songs for us to count along with.

We can count forwards …

….. and backwards.

Do you have a favourite counting song to share with us?

Can you think of any words that begin with the sound `i’?

Can you think of any words that begin with the sound `n’?

Can you think of any words that begin with the sound `m’?

Can you think of any words that begin with the sound `d’?
